Grouped Data Columns (4×2) with Error Bars

This tutorial will show how to use the box-whisker graph in TechGraph Editor to setup four groups of error bars. Each group has two columns of data. Box-whisker will calculate the mean and SD (Standard Deviation) values from a column of sample data and display as error bars. Shown below are the settings in the Data Table and the Edit Chart used to create this chart.

Data Table – Sample data can easily be changed or replaced by pasting data from an external worksheet.
  • Graph Type is Box-Whisker.
  • X Data Type is Label.  Data in X Column entries are ignored.
  • Graph A, D, G, and J contains data for the first error bar in the group.
  • Graph B, E, H and K contains data for the second error bar in the group.
  • Graph C, F, and I have a dummy data (-10). Thiese values are used to separate the four groups of error bars.

Note:   Click on the “Help” button on the toolbar to find out how to edit, delete, copy and paste in the Data Table.

Edit Chart – A set of icons (Titles, Settings, Y Axis, Box-Whisker ) to change the settings and appearance the chart.

Settings  – specify the style of markers and error bars

  • Enter legend entry for Graph A and B.  For this example, “Cell A” is the legend text for A and “Cell B” for B. Unchecked Show Legend in C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J and K.
  • Select “Top” for Legend Placement.
  • Click on the Graph Style for Graph A to show Style for Graph A pop-up.  Use the ColorFillPattern and Thickness to set the error bar style.  Use the Color, Type and Size for markers.  Click on Apply to save the changes.  Repeat this step for Graph D, G, and J.  They should have the same Graph Style as Graph A.
  • Click on the Graph Style for Graph B to show Style for Graph B pop-up.  Use the ColorFillPattern and Thickness to set the error bar style.  Use the Color, Type and Size for markers. Click on Apply to save the changes.  Repeat this step for Graph E, H, and K.  They should have the same Graph Style as Graph B.

     Y axis

  • Enter values in Minimum, Maximum and Major Div to set the Y Axis scale and divisions. Leave these values empty for automatic scaling.
    • The values for this example are Minimum = 0, Maximum =70 and Major Div = 7.

     Box-Whisker

  • Check Sample Data checkbox to display the sample data in each column.
  • Check Error Bars & Standard Dev. checkbox. Mean and SD values are calculated from the column sample data to display as error bars.

Note:  For this example, use the text command in Drawing Objects to add ‘Placebo’, ’10 mg’, ’50 mg’ and ‘100 mg’ labels below the X axis

     Edit Chart Toolbar Options

  •  Print Chart prints your chart.
  •  Download Image downloads your chart as an SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) file or image file(PNG, JPEG, TIF, PDF).
  •  Drawing Objects customize your chart with labels, lines, arrows, circles, images, and logos.
